Letter writing “extras”

{ Day 3 of Universal Letter Writing Week 2011}

Accessories. Tools. Accoutrements. Sure, a sheet of notebook paper and a pencil will suffice, but sometimes that little “extra” something is fun to have. And it can elevate letter writing from a means of communication to a fun hobby, and even a form of art!

If you’re planning to embrace handwritten correspondence this year, you might want to have a nice set of writing pens, pretty papers, or colored envelopes. When I write letters I like to close them up with sealing wax.

“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To talk of many things:
Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—
Of cabbages—and kings—”

{Lewis Carroll}

What about you? Do you ever add something extra to your letters? Do you write in calligraphy, use handmade stationery, or decorate with stickers?

Here are some fun letter writing accessories I’ve found on Amazon (I haven’t used them all, so these are not recommendations – just ideas).

  • I bought a super-fancy writing kit that included several forms of sealing wax. But it didn’t come with instructions and I haven’t yet gotten around to figuring out how to use it!

    I do, however, like to use a nice pen. A great, smooth-flowing option that is still a fairly inexpensive one is the Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pen. (I understand that a V-pen, in Europe, is the same thing from the same company, but the nib is a slightly different size.) I love to write with these! (If your handwriting is very small, though, the Varsity might lay down too thick a line of ink for you.) I don’t think they’re really supposed to be refillable (‘though the description this Amazon product page says they are: http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Disposable-Fountain-Assorted-90029/dp/B00092PRCA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294677376&sr=8-1), but I do know some people have pulled the nibs out with pliers and refilled them.

  • Maybe I’m a nerd, but I like to cut funny pictures or phrases from magazines and glue them all over the envelopes.

    My mom was amazing with the extras. There was always something on the envelope…stickers, magazine pictures, inspiring quotes from magazines/newspapers, etc. If the letter was on a note card, the extras matched the theme. Quite often even the stamp matched the theme.
